In my case it is ok, as I don't intend for the blog and the site to be overly connected. Maybe one day I will come back to it all... I had the same problem - nothing displays when I tried to get it to display (or not display) specific news categories. I found the solution in the mailing list archives: my "general record storage page" where the categories were stored was hidden. I shifted them to a non-hidden page and all was well! did you figure out what the problem was with this, eventually?
